Following the well-attended meeting of neighbours on Saturday 15th August 2105 to help relaunch the RA, Lois and Brian Cope came up with the idea that we ought to do this every month. So another coffee morning was organised for Saturday 5th September, which again was well attended.

As part of its brief, the Steering Committee is very keen to promote any ideas that will improve our social life.

We therefore started organising a monthly coffee morning at the Crate and Apple on the first Saturday of every month from 10am. In this relaxed social context, residents are able to drop in and meet fellow Westgate residents over a coffee – including all those from the side streets of course. We even have some residents from Tollhouse close and Orchard Street who like to come which is fine by us.

Other social gatherings

Our annual street party is well known and was the first community event to be organised before the RA was restarted even. This event has now given birth to the Westgate Xmas Party which is held indoors. The first packed out the pub so we are hoping to hold our 2017 party in the historic Henry VIII Sherborne Room in the Bishop’s Palace. Watch this space.

Two other residents have come up with other groups. There is a thriving Knit and Natter Group at the pub at 10am on Monday mornings and a French conversation group, Bavardage au Pub, which meets in the pub at 6.30pm usually on the last Monday evening of the month.

The pub also organises events and the quiz and the bingo nights have proved very popular. Every second Wednesday there is a special menu for residents from 6.30pm where a regular group meets up for a community supper.

The next Westgate Residents’ Coffee Morning will always be held on the first Saturday of the month from 10am at the Crate & Apple, 12-14 Westgate. See you there – and bring some more ideas like these!
