In our fight to combat the worst of the Whitehouse Farm Development, a decent relationship with our local councillors seems a must. We are lucky in that Westgate straddles two wards: Chichester West for households to the North of the street and Chichester South for those on the south side. This gives us twice the number of councillors to draw on, including the Leader of the West Sussex County Council. We were very pleased that six councillors attended our recent AGM and made important contributions.
Who does what?
We all find it quite easy on days of high frustration to indulge in a bit of council-bashing, but remember these are ordinary citizens who have taken on the responsibility to represent our democratic interests.
The difficulty in addressing “The Council” of course in this City (and in many others) is that we have four levels of government to deal with, all with varying levels of responsibility: the Chichester City Council (the parish council); the Chichester District Council; the West Sussex County Council; and not forgetting our local MP in Westminster and the national government and its agencies. It can also be confusing that several councillors sit on both the City and the District Councils.
