WHITEHOUSE FARM – I attended the Reserved Matters Community Liaison Group meeting on Wednesday evening. This was the first meeting organised by “Remarkable Engagement” who are ‘Government relations, public affairs and stakeholder communications specialists’ and have been retained by Miller and Linden Homes who are the developers for WHF.

Their approach was friendly and they appeared to wish to hear what we had to say, although the message was slightly mixed as at one point it was said that the road layout had been agreed at the outline planning permission stage and could not now be changed, but later they agreed that input from the Infrastructure Steering Group, which they are required to set up under the Section 106 agreement, would be included in the detailed planning. The infrastructure Steering Group will be based on the membership of the WSCC group, which is chaired by Louise Goldsmith and which I have attended for some time. The Section 106 agreement is now expected to be signed “by the end of the year”.

THE WESTGATE ENVIRONMENT – Following discussion at the last committee meeting I arranged a meeting with Chris Dye of WSCC Highways Department to look at the state of the roads, pavements and signage along Westgate. He was very friendly but we were unable to identify very much, that could be done at this time to improve the environment in Westgate. His e-mail to me is here

CHICHESTER ROAD SPACE AUDIT – The Chichester Road Space Audit (RSA) seems to be gaining momentum and if it is implemented it is going to impact on our lives in Westgate. I strongly urge you to visit the website to see what it is all about. The executive summary (sections 1.1.1 to1.1.28) is informative and I hope will encourage you to dip further into the document. Pages 77and 78 (6.2.28 – 6.2.42) refer to the Westgate area, but many of the other changes will alter our environment. Please let your opinions be known here.

SKIPTON BUILDING SOCIETY – Thank you to Des Evans (Tannery Close) who has entered a competition with the Skipton Building Society on behalf of WGRA and we have been short listed for a money prize. Let us hope we get through the next round.

WEST WALLS RA – will be holding their inaugural AGM at the Chichester Inn at 7.00pm on 4th October. Members of the WGRA are invited to attend.

ROAD WORK DISRUPTION IN WEST STREET – Residents are reminded that the West Street carriageway is going to be resurfaced. Work is expected to commence on Monday 23rd October for approximately three weeks. Balfour Beatty will be working between 07:00 and 17:00 hours Monday to Friday.

The scheme involves excavating the carriageways, reconstructing and resurfacing. West Street will be closed to cars and light delivery vehicles. All parking on West Street will be suspended. A phased series of lane closures will be put in place and controlled by Stop & Go boards whilst the works are undertaken and traffic signals at night to allow continued bus operations and HGV deliveries. Pedestrians will still be able to use the pavement and safety fencing will be in place for the safety of the public and workforce. The closure of West Street to cars and light vehicles, as well as the suspension of parking, will be in place 24 hours a day for the duration of the works.

Businesses usually serviced by HGV’s via West Street will still be using their usual access arrangements but you should expect delays if driving in the area. Light delivery access to areas between Tower Street and North Street will be diverted via Orchard Street, under North Walls to Chapel Street and Tower Street. A height restriction of 10ft is in place under North Walls.

For any concerns you might have, email the County Council via their website or call 01243 642105 between 8am and 6pm. For further information or updates and amendments to this programme, please visit this County Council web page or liaise with the onsite team, as they might be able to answer your query more quickly. If you have any concerns regarding access during these works please ask the onsite staff directly.

Thank you. Richard Brownfield

CHRISTMAS PARTY – The annual Christmas Party for Westgate Residents will be held on Wednesday December 13th. The final format has not yet been finalised but please put this date in your diary now. Thank you, Brian Raincock
